At Alternative Bridges, we believe that personal growth is about guidance, about seeing your life’s journey through a different lens, and having the ability to create a new journey.
My own story is an example. Growing up, I was a statistical product of my environment: a teenage mother, a dropout, and living on government assistance. Every time I would visit a government office I would leave feeling worse than when I went in. I felt like I was “less than” and hopeless. My perception at that time was that no one spoke to me with dignity or respect. When I started working I decided to treat people with dignity and respect, no matter what their socio-economic status was.
Clients often ask, ‘How did you get into counseling?’ My answer is that counseling found me because the feeling I had at that critical period in my life forced me to be an advocate for myself. That experience taught me how to become an advocate for others. My trauma became a gift. As a paraprofessional, I was gifted the privilege to work for a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who owned a treatment center. She believed every therapist must start the healing journey for themselves. So I spent the next two years working on my emotional wounds. I completed the same therapeutic assignments and counseling sessions that each of my clients experience.
At Alternative Bridges, we believe counseling can be an important means to growth for everyone. We believe the growth starts within the person, and therapy is the assistance that guides you to the higher sense of awareness. That higher sense of awareness allows you to create a new journey.
The techniques we use vary from person to person, depending on the needs of the individual. Some of those techniques include somatic experience, inner child work, and experiential therapy. We take a holistic approach to therapy based on our belief that our mind, body and soul are all connected.
Several clients tell us that our approach is different than counselors they’ve seen in the past. We believe that difference can be attributed to experiential therapy, which is where we explore their story and discover where the past collides into the present, or where unresolved trauma lies. We often look for a “big bang” discovery, but usually when the light bulb comes on it can be subtle and emotional. It’s sometimes difficult to describe, but this shift into healing can be a powerful experience.
